...yields an 8-core, 24GB monster capable of hosting 10 VMs comfortably for $2600.

Nice, nice. Now, could you also include a LINK from newegg.com to s/w you would recommend to install, including these 10 VMs :-) and update a bottom line. :-) Like, IMHO, h/w without a s/w is pretty much useless. Also, with your top pick of s/w, how would you recommend install and configure it? How long will it take to install? Do you need any security s/w ( A/V?). Also, how fast you assemble this monster from parts.
Also, please, no MSFT prices. I would like to see a true cost.
Nice extra would be mention how you monitor this system and how you hook it up to Internet or WAN ( one card?) directly/hub e.t.c. I assume you use remote desktop, but how you power cycle this system? Any means to re-start VM that is stack?
How H/D should be connected/formated/shared ?
How redandance is working?
Backup?
Archival?
Restore?
If system is down, how long it takes to put it back on-line?
You see where I am going: Total price and time ( cost as well) for such system. This is probably more questions that you can cover in a few posts :-)
